Last week our team planted hundreds of new ornamental peanut rhizomes on the property. Ornamental peanut (‘grama mani’ en español) is a plant native to South America that’s becoming a popular ground cover alternative in sustainable agriculture and landscaping settings. Ornamental peanut provides all kinds of benefits to the land:
It’s a nitrogen-fixer – meaning that the roots hold nitrogen in the soil, which improves soil health and benefits neighboring plants.
It prevents soil erosion.
It is naturally drought-resistant and will not require watering.
The beautiful flowers do not produce nectar, which means the plant doesn’t attract insects or other critters – making it ideal for walkways and recreational areas.
Here at Dragon’s Garden we use permaculture principles to guide how we develop and cultivate our land – one of those principles is making small and slow improvements. We know that change takes time, and taking small steps like planting beneficial ground cover will serve the environment in the years to come
